20+ Fall Traditions Worth Repeating Every Year
Every year we usher in a new Fall, where the sun sets earlier, the wind whistles louder, and despite the air turning cooler the atmosphere looks and feels warmer with reddish orange leaves against rich brown bark right before they fall on the wet ground.
Fall is my favorite season, because it has this air that just invites you to slow down. It's the perfect backroad to hit cruise and enjoy everything around you. Growing up in the Midwest it seemed as if it had waited all year round for Fall where things really came to life.
And as I grow older I realize the importance of bringing traditions both old and new into the season with me to create my own joys that aren't dependent on just one place.
Fall traditions are the small, repeatable rituals that keep the season from slipping by unnoticed. You don't need a packed calendar, you just need moments that help bring you to life in this season.
So here, you've been invited in to grab a few rituals that serve you, and leave the ones that don't to make space for your best fall yet.
What You'll Walk Away With:
- A short list of fall rituals worth repeating (not just trying once)
- A simple way to build your own personal fall bucket list without overplanning
- Permission to let the season be quiet instead of curated for anyone else
Fall Traditions for a Slower Season
What Makes a Fall Tradition Worth Keeping
A tradition is less of a one-and-done checklist, but rather an activity, or moment that is felt. A tradition as significant as experiencing Christmas in New York at your favorite hotel, but as small and just as meaningful as listening to a certain playlist while you journal in the evenings.
But no matter what, it's that in these moments you begin to have a sense of "this season wouldn't be right without this" โ wanting to save a certain recipe for a certain season, or realizing your favorite show only truly hits when you watch it around a certain time. Those are little signs to point you to what brings you simple joy.
The great thing about traditions is you don't need 100, you don't even need a dozen. Simply having 3-4 traditions that create joy is enough. In fact, it's preferred. You get the intention without the overwhelm.
You are able to focus on the feeling, rather than just another list.
Small Rituals That Anchor the Season
Small rituals are the anchor of a truly felt season. The rituals that are low-effort, yet high-impact and repeatable.
These rituals are simple enough to fit seamlessly into your day or be sprinkled into your week.
- Baking Sundays โ Set your Sundays as designated baking days to try all of the cozy recipes you've been collecting throughout the year. Pair them with a good book, or deliver them to friends (I'm sure you'll receive no complaints).
- Become A Regular Somewhere โ Whether a coffee shop, a library, or a farmer's market. Watch the Sunset with a Warm Cider or Coffee
- Evening Walks at Dusk
- Rainy weekend rewatch โ When there's rain on the forecast, grab your favorite blanket, and comfort snacks for a rewatch weekend of your favorite show that always delivers on the fall feels
A Day (or Weekend) Worth Setting Aside
The rituals that make for the perfect excuse for a solo date or time spent with someone special.
Requiring only minimal planning ahead of time, with all the cozy stillness that Fall welcomes.
- Apple picking
- Drive-in movie โ if you haven't experienced a drive-in movie before I think Fall is one of the best times to do just that. Cool nights, the scent of popcorn all around you, and a movie backlit by a sea of stars.
- Pumpkin patch
- Find a favorite local Harvest festival โ the festivals with hay littering the ground, caramel apples, and neighbors sharing a laugh underneath a setting sun
- Apple everything day โ a creative way to spend your day. From start to finish experimenting with including apple in everything from your latte, to a new recipe, and even a nice simmer pot.
- Movie marathon
Sharing The Season with Others
Autumn makes for an amazing hosting season. Another opportunity to gather indoors with the people who cherish most. Without the guilt of spending more time indoors than outdoors while still making the most of each day.
Where you might swap out a bruschetta board for fresh baked apple cider donuts, and retire the white sangria for a red. Traditions where you could simply use a little connection.
- Wine night โ this could be as simple as catching up with the girls over wine, or making a night of it and hosting your own wine tasting
- Autumn dinner party
- Make cozy fall baskets for loved ones โ if you share the love language of gift giving then you will love pouring yourself into this tradition. It can be uniquely you and so worth adding light to someone else's day.
Tending to Yourself as the Year Turns
Because the moments you spend with yourself learning, growing, and refining deserve just as much space on your calendar as anything else.
From inner reflection, to outer refreshes, reflection and self-care isn't just reserved for one big moment of the year, but small frequent ones.
- Create a Fall reading list
- Candle making class โ not only is it a cozy activity to fall into, but you also get to go home with a scent perfectly designed for your space in this season.
- Curate a fall capsule wardrobe โ something as simple as grounding yourself in what well crafted, timeless pieces that feel good to you helps you to show up exactly as you want to be
- Make end of year goals โ The older I get the more I check in with myself. Creating quarterly goals have produced some of my most productive years. Its something I've started fairly recently but it's something about breaking goals down into smaller actions that make it easier to check in with yourself. So take this time and use it as a fresh wind for chasing your dreams and getting clear about your goals, or a healthy headstart to your New Year's goals.
- Read a classic โ no matter if it takes a day, a week or the entire season. Reading classic literature is one of those small blessings we actually over look too often. To have access to a rich collection of literature at our fingertips, and the freedom to absorb it. It's a simple luxury worth taking advantage of in these slow moments.
- Shop for a new cold weather fragrance โ treat yourself to a new fragrance that feels rich and warm.
- Refresh your space โ don't underestimate the power of changing your environment. Whether it be a deep clean, rearranging your bedroom, or pulling out all of the earthy vases.
- Write a letter to yourself to be read a year from now โ I often mention the act of writing letters to yourself because it truly is so impactful and deeply personal.
It can be a love letter, a bucket list, or just a memo of all the traditions you've found in this season that you want to etch down to continue so that you never forget.
